World level sailing is the stuff that dreams are made of for a lot of our younger sailors and for anyone who has raced you can imagine the level of competition there must be when the best sailors from each country are pitted against each other. Our very own James King and Jack Butters were selected and off they went to the world stage. This is what they had to say for themselves…
“The ISAF Youth Worlds 2015 were in Langkawi, Malaysia. The location was forecast to be very light, so following selection James and I started looking for light winds to train on our chartered SL16. Unfortunately, there were not many weekends of light winds this Autumn, although we were able to take part in the Grand Prix d’Armistice at Lacnau near Bordeaux against a large number of French teams.”
“Following another very windy weekend of team building in Weymouth with the rest of Team GBR, next stop was Heathrow. It took 15 hours to fly out there and we arrived late in the evening, minus our luggage. We had a week to get used to the heat and humidity, and visit some of the tourist highlights. There were some delays with the boats, so missed out on the training days and first day of racing, but finally everything came together and we got out racing. The location was forecast to be very light, however the first few days of racing were in about 15 knots. The standard of competition was very good and the shifty conditions made the racing very hard.”
“The opening ceremony was a very big event and it was great to see all the nations together and all the traditional practices such as the pouring of the waters. The team spirit was very good and the coaches definitely made the event easier for us and improved the performance and results of the whole team. Overall it was a great event and a great experience.”
